Suddenly Andrey is arrested and sentenced to prison after his own novel, Lyubimov, was secretly published abroad. With danger around every corner, and not knowing who can be trusted in the torturous reality of the shadowy world around him, Alex Loevsky’s life becomes a living game of chess as he continually must stay one step ahead of the vicious KGB agents who are out to close in on him as he attempts to smuggle the transcript of Andrey’s “show trial” out of the country and expose this and other atrocities of the regime to the Western world.
The checkmate he is racing headlong towards will culminate in one of two things...freedom, or death. The courage it takes to live life, and find love, and freedom, against all odds is palpable and raw in this heartbreaking novel.

I am acquainted with the author and his wife, who are good friends of my cousin and his partner. I read the book when I was visiting them - in one day! It opened my eyes to a part of history that I knew very little about. Even though I knew the outcome, it was very suspenseful, with characters I really cared about.
Checkmate Run is like being on a mental roller coaster! It is full of suspense, twists and turns, action & bravery all intertwined with passion & romance! I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading it, but the more I read the more intrigued I became. It was quite a riveting depiction of life and real events growing up in the Soviet Union dealing with Jewish Oppression during the mid 1900's. Alex was a strong willed young man that was driven by passion for the arts, Medical school & love. Shaping him into a man with solid morals and values. Yes, he pushed the boundaries a bit, tip toed over the lines, but it was all for the greater-good. He prevails by using his courage and smarts as the big red hand of communism was trying to knock him down & off in more ways than one. Through the progression of the book, you begin to see that every calculated move made by Alex and Lora always had an end game. The true purpose for their family and future was Freedom & happiness in a new world. It all seemed so surreal, it makes you reflect and puts life into perspective.
This book left me with several different feelings. It started rather slow but I am extremely glad that I followed through and finished it to the end! This was an amazing story following Alex Loevsky a Russian Jew and his trials and tribulations of finding a way to get out of the country that decided to turn it’s back on a whole religion. I have never read a book set during the Cold War on the communist side of the Iron Curtain. As I said this book was a sow starter for me but I am glad that I have the philosophy that if I start it I will finish it because for me the 10th chapter onward was some extremely riveting storytelling.
Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. Checkmate Run by Allan Alexander tells us the journey of Alex Loevsky a medical student and poem writer. In this book we can see the struggle caused by the brutal soviet regimen and how it was for this Jewish sure do/writer. The books takes us through the struggle of trying to get in to medical school also how Alex was incarcerated, betrayed and more.
I have to say this is not the usual book I read but I was fully surprise of the roller coarser of felling a and emotions this book has. Filled with suspense, twists, heartbreak and struggles. If you are into historical books this one is for you.
This is a short review but don't mistake that is because is not a good book is just is to easy to give it away so I recommend you to read it.

Just love it! What a story!
I have been an avid reader most of my life. I have read an unaccountable number of all types of books. Checkmate Run" is one of the best books I have read. It is extremely well written, grabbed and held my attention. The characters are well portrayed and are described so well that they have a very real quality. The story and plot are easy to follow. And I learned some history from it
What a phenomenal novel. A Truly remarkable one!!
I look forward to the next fast reading novel by this very talented author.
